Cast Acrylic for Furniture and Interiors — A Designer's Guide

6 min read

Cast acrylic has been a material of choice for furniture and interior design since the mid-twentieth century — from Kartell Ghost chairs to museum-quality display cases to Singapore's contemporary retail fit-outs. Its glass-like transparency, workability, UV stability, and colour range make it uniquely versatile across residential, commercial, and hospitality applications. This guide covers the practical considerations for specifying and using cast acrylic in interior environments.

Why Cast, Not Extruded

For furniture and interior applications, cast acrylic is the correct specification in nearly every case. Three reasons drive this consistently:

Surface quality: Cast acrylic polishes to a glass-clear finish at cut edges. At 12mm and above, the prismatic optical effect — multiple colours refracted through the edge depth as light changes angle — is a recognised design detail that extruded acrylic cannot replicate cleanly. This is the visual signature of premium acrylic furniture.

Bond integrity: Interior furniture requires strong, invisible solvent-bonded joints. Cast acrylic, owing to its higher molecular weight, forms bonds that approach the strength of the parent material. A well-bonded cast acrylic joint is effectively invisible and structurally continuous.

Long-term stability: Cast acrylic formulated with UV stabilisers maintains its optical clarity for a minimum of 30 years in interior environments. This is the industry benchmark for permanent installations — retail fit-outs, residential furniture, architectural elements. Extruded grades are typically less stable over this timescale, and are not specified for applications where long-term appearance is a requirement.

Thickness Selection for Furniture

Furniture ElementRecommended ThicknessNotes
Shelf panels (span to 600mm)12mmAdd support or increase thickness for longer spans
Shelf panels (span to 900mm)15mm
Shelf panels (span to 1200mm)20mmConsider intermediate support
Dining tabletops15mm20mm for spans exceeding 1400mm
Coffee tables12–15mmDepending on span and design intent
Bar fronts and credenzas15–20mmHigher thickness for visual mass
Cabinet sides and backs8–10mmWith internal framing
Cabinet doors and fronts6–8mm
Chair shells (formed)6–8mmThermoforming or cold-bending required
Wall-mounted decorative panels3–6mmNo structural load

One practical note: acrylic deflects more than glass at equivalent thickness. A 15mm acrylic shelf spanning 1200mm will develop more centre deflection under uniform load than a 15mm glass shelf. For long, open spans, either increase thickness, add a rear support, or combine acrylic with a structural substrate behind.

Colour and Finish Options

The ten standard stock colours cover the most common interior design specifications:

  • Crystal Clear and Ice White are the workhorses — clear for transparency and display; ice white for soft, diffused light in backlit applications and privacy partitions
  • Midnight Black and Signal White for bold graphic applications, retail fixtures, and contemporary furniture
  • Sky Blue, Sunrise Orange, Sage Green, and Dusty Rose for branded retail environments, feature furniture, and colour-led interior elements
  • Silver Mirror and Gold Mirror for retail fit-outs, decorative panels, and reflective feature elements — note that mirror acrylic is a coating on the reverse of a transparent sheet; the coated face should be protected from contact in installation

Custom colours — Pantone and RAL matching, and custom tints — are available by special order. Minimum order quantities apply and lead times extend to 2–4 weeks for custom formulations.

Applications in Singapore Interiors

Retail and F&B Fit-Outs

Cast acrylic is the default material for Singapore retail interiors requiring transparency, colour, and fast fabrication cycles. Display shelving, risers, sign faces, branded activation structures, bar fronts, and backlit menu boards are all standard applications. The short fabrication cycle — sheets to finished elements in days — suits Singapore's fast retail fit-out cadence.

Residential Interiors

In Singapore's high-humidity climate, cast acrylic outperforms wood and MDF in wet areas. It is fully moisture-resistant and requires no sealing, painting, or finishing — making it appropriate for bathroom shelving, shower niches, and kitchen elements where MDF would swell and fail. Feature shelving, room dividers, coffee tables, and statement lighting fixtures are the most common residential applications.

Hospitality and Commercial

Hotel lobbies, serviced apartment common areas, and premium office fit-outs use cast acrylic for reception counters, wayfinding systems, partitions, and feature walls. The material's ability to be CNC-routed and solvent-bonded into complex three-dimensional forms, combined with its optical clarity, makes it suited to bespoke hospitality elements that communicate premium quality.

Maintenance in Interior Environments

Cast acrylic in interior use requires minimal maintenance but has specific sensitivities:

  • Clean with a soft microfibre cloth and mild soap solution — avoid paper towels, which are abrasive enough to cause surface micro-scratches over time
  • Use purpose-made acrylic cleaners (anti-static formulations also help reduce dust attraction)
  • Never use alcohol-based cleaners, acetone, or any solvent — these will craze and cloud the surface permanently and irreversibly
  • For minor surface scratches: Novus No. 2 plastic polish applied in circular motions with a soft cloth restores clarity
  • For deeper scratches: wet-sand progressively from 600 grit through 1000, 1500, and 2000 grit, then buff to a clear finish
  • Keep away from heat sources above 80°C — cast acrylic begins to soften at approximately 100°C. Recessed spotlights at close range and proximity to cooking equipment are the main risks in interior settings

Working with a Fabricator in Singapore

When specifying cast acrylic for a project, provide your fabricator with the following to ensure an accurate quote and correct material supply:

  • Nominal thickness and any tolerance-sensitive dimensions in the design
  • Colour reference — stock colour name, or Pantone/RAL code if custom
  • Edge treatment required — polished, sanded, laser-finished, or as-sawn
  • Cut dimensions or sheet format (full sheet, half sheet, or cut-to-size)
  • Quantity
  • Required lead time — standard stock orders can be ready within days; custom colours require 2–4 weeks
